What is your favorite swimming place? One of the best swimming holes was a swimming hole in old quarry on the island of Vinalhaven in Maine that filled up with spring water! Fantastic. So I started to look and guess what? There is a site for people listing natural springs around the world! Who new? http://www.findaspring.com/about/ It is home to a thriving lobster fishery and hosts a summer colony. Since there is no bridge to the island, Vinalhaven is accessible from Rockland via an approximately hour-and-fifteen-minute ferry ride across West Penobscot Bay. The land was rocky and rugged, the water off the coast line un-swimmable, but so wild that you could see wildlife such as seals sunning on warm days. The village was quaint and inhabited by locals and summer folk in distinct measures. I was told that most of the land without homes, had been donated by loyal islanders who bequeathed it as walking paths and as nature preserves that crisscross the whole island. The two quarries, testament to a once vibrant industry, remained silent for many years once they were abandoned, but now you could hear the delighted laughter of locals swimming in the fresh spring water. You see, it took years but both quarries filled up over the years. The rain and natural springs fed the old quarries until they became like lakes. Only the locals know of where to find these swimming holes. You get to swim at your own risk of course, but the surroundings are breathtaking and the water is incredibly cold, fresh and refreshing.
