Shower Filters!
I will start with a personal confession. I do not have a shower filter. My skin seems to be Okay. But working here at Jonli, we do carry shower filters and I know at least one good friend that buys them on a regular basis from us. She has sensitive skin, and finds
that the filter really helps. So the evidence is second hand and anecdotal the definition being “not necessarily true or reliable, based on personal accounts rather than facts or
research”.
Which got me thinking:
What are the factoids in the pros and cons of using a shower filter?
Cons: they cost money, where as you would not pay a thing for taking a shower except for hot water, and they can slow the flow.
This blog post is on the WHYS!! So to begin:
How does one rate Shower Water Filters?
-They must be effective at removing or reducing chlorine,
-They have an Up-flow design that maintains water pressure and
-They can’t be too bulky to lower the height of your shower to your knees (just
kidding).
We offer a filter that uses a REDOX FILTRATION MEDIA instead of carbon, because
carbon is less effective in hot water, but you can do some research and find a
product that you believe in!
There are so many options for shower water filters on the market!
I visited the Allergy Buyers Club, which scored high on my google search for the best shower filters out there. For those with allergies, this is one of those best kept secrets that everyone knows about! They all claim to help in relieving symptoms of sore, aching muscles, irritated eyes, dry skin, dandruff and brittle hair. Hmmmm .........
I personally like the shiny healthy hair solution promise!
Question: What is the largest organ in our body?
Answer: Our skin!
When I was on a Cruise this summer, I got seasick big time, the only thing that worked was a tiny patch behind my ears for nausea. Absorption through skin contact is the most effective way to deliver the medication that dulls the inner ear nerve endings. Our skin is more porous than we think! Chlorine is entering our bodies through our skin.
So what does chlorine do to our bodies and should we be worried?
I believe that the rise of the shower filter is just an extension of our health conscious communities, if you care about having filtered water, drinking it is only half the exposure apparently!
Apartment Dwellers
For apartment dwellers Shower Water Filters are the best option,
because a whole building filter systems is just not in the cards. For home
owners, this option beats the investment in a whole house water filter
system.
The American Journal of Public Health says that chlorine (found in most municipal water) can increase the risk of asthma, skin irritations due to dermal absorption, disease and other
breathing issues. This is just plain scary if you ask me?!
The U.S EPA recently stated that every home has “detectable levels of chloroform gas in the air”. This gas is the product of chlorine being vaporized in steam, like when you shower. In other words, showering is now a hazard to your health, according to this article, inhaling vaporized chlorine (can be almost 20 times normal exposure) is higher than swimming pools.
So,
you may be curious about Shower Filters, it does give one pause for thought,
especially if your skin is dry and irritated, or if you have breathing and
allergy issues or have a compromised immune system. You can try one out, at
least your hair will be shiny and at best you will feel better or even great!
